My Musical Journey

My musical memories go back to age three or four, when my dad played recordings of the Nutcracker Suite, Beethoven’s Fifth, and Schubert’s Unfinished while I was falling asleep. At age thirteen my interest in classical music sparked, and I exhausted my father’s well-chosen but limited selection of LPs and tapes. Over the next five years I plumbed the record collections of the Worthington and Columbus (Ohio) Public Libraries, expanding my knowledge of orchestral music from Beethoven to Stravinsky. Subsequently as a music student at Cincinnati and Indiana my tastes widened to all periods of music history and more genres: including chamber music, choral music and opera.

After completing degrees in composition and conducting, I chose to pursue a degree in Computer Science and went on to a thirty-seven year career as a software engineer. But during all those years as an engineer, my love of classical music never waned, and my curiosity to learn more continued unabated.

Over my life I’ve acquired deep knowledge of a considerable body of the classical music repertoire. With Explore Great Music with Ted, I want to leave a legacy of a lifetime of love and learning about great music.

About the Channel

Here you will find videos I have created for listeners who want to learn more about, and students who seek a deeper understanding of, classical music.

Listen like a musician

General audiences will appreciate the videos titled “Listen like a musician”, where I present high level descriptions of beautiful passages, memorable themes, and remarkable performances – but don’t require the ability to read music or prior musical training.

Study the score, Follow the analysis

Music students will appreciate the videos titled “Study the score”, where I do a deep dive into the elements of applied music theory: such as formal and harmonic analysis, motivic development and counterpoint, orchestration and more. In addition, the videos titled “Follow the analysis” display analyzed scores synchronized with audio of the performances.
